BOHERQUILL RAMBLERS: Rambler Eileen Moreton led a walk in the Slieve Bloom Mountains in County Laois last Sunday. The route of the walk climbed up through Glenbarrow, carved out by the River Barrow on its way down to the lowlands of the midlands. The trail passed waterfalls and gorges as it climbed through areas of pine forest, cleared for commercial use in several places, and stretches of birch, willow and holly. There were no leaves on the trees yet, so it was easy to see the course of the river, sometimes far below the winding path. At the top of the walk the group emerged onto a forest road with extensive views north towards Tullamore over the flat country of north Laois and Offaly. The Ramblers followed the road back down to their starting point in warm sunshine and accompanied by birdsong which contributed to a very pleasant walk, a little different to the usual Sunday outings. Thank you to Eileen for leading the walk, to Paddy O’Brien of Rover Coaches for providing the coach and to Ramblers Chairman Brian Nerney for driving the coach. Next Sunday, April 28th, Oliver Usher will lead a walk in Dun na Ri Forest near Kingscourt, County Cavan. A coach will leave O’Brien’s Garage on the Lynn Road in Mullingar at 12.30pm and arrive at Dun na Ri at 2pm approximately. Those wishing to travel on the coach are asked to contact Brian Nerney on 086 2596656 as soon as possible. The Boherquill Ramblers Midland Walking Festival is only weeks away now, and as always some very interesting walks are promised. The Festival will open with an evening walk in the grounds of Tullynally Castle, near Castlepollard on Friday May 10th. On Saturday May 11th there will be a longer walk in the Castlepollard area and on Sunday May 12th the venue will be the beautiful and very historic village of Fore. Further details will be given in future Notes.
