The area was shocked and saddened on Saturday 28th May as they awoke to hear of the sudden death which occurred the previous night in the Mater Hospital, Dublin of Mrs Carmel Redmond, Bree, Castleblaney, Co Monaghan. A member of the very popular Finnegan Family from Castlepoles, Arva - Carmel was only 48 years of age and while she was sick for a couple of weeks the suddenness of her passing came as a complete shock to all who knew her. In her youth Carmel was popular with all ages and her smile light up her whole face. She wanted to do children’s nursing and with her lifelong friend Ann Mc Cabe they enrolled in St Ultan’s Children’s Hospital, Charlemont Street, Dublin. With just two years of their years year course completed the Hospital closed virtually overnight and all staff were laid off. The two girls answered advertisements for jobs in Castleblaney and moved there in c 1981. Carmel soon became a popular figure in her adopted town where she met and in June 1984 married Johnny Redmond. Her remains were removed to her residence on Monday evening where she reposed until removal to St Mary’s Church, Castleblaney on Wednesday morning for Requiem Mass followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. There was a constant flow of mourners through the house while her funeral attracted a huge congregation which showed the esteem in which Carmel and her family are held. Carmel is survived by her husband Johnny, son Neal, daughter Janeen, her mother Mrs Eileen Finnegan, Castlepoles, brothers Sean, Castlepoles Pat, Alalcken, Cavan, Hugh, Cormore, Jim Farrangarve, Denis, Castlepoles, Philip, Newtownbond, Edgeworthstown, sisters Mrs Mary Cully, Arva and Mrs Nuala Leddy, Potahee, Ballinagh, nephews, nieces and a large family circle to all of whom we extend our sincere sympathy in their sad loss.
