Tragedy as man in his 60s dies following house fire in the Midlands

A man in his 60s has died in a house fire in the midlands.

Offaly Assistant Chief Fire Officer Denis Canty said they were alerted to the fire at 7.38am this morning March 15 at Gortnamona.

However, Mr Canty said by the time they arrived the fire was almost out.

One person was found dead at the scene.

Longford man avoids jail term for having stolen power tools at Sunday market

A Longford man who had stolen power tools valued at approximately €3,000 at a Sunday market has been given a suspended sentence.

 

Two units of Tullamore fire service and a jeep attended the fire.

Gardaí are investigating. They said: ''A man aged in his early 60s has been pronounced deceased. His body remains at the scene and the State Pathologist has been notified.

"The Garda Technical Bureau will conduct an examination of the scene.

"No other persons were injured.''
