New John McDwyer play comes to Backstage Theatre in Longford

Longford's Backstage Theatre is to play host to the World Premiere of John McDwyer’s new play, Twilight

Fans of Beezneez Theatre company are in for a real treat this month with the World Premiere of John McDwyer’s new play, Twilight.

Well known for his thought provoking plays such as Lovely Leitrim, United, An Ordinary Man and Callaghan’s Place and his sparkling comedies, Unforgiven and Turning Mammy, the playwright describes Twilight as a little bit of both with the leaning towards thought provoking themes which will give rise to much discussion afterwards.

He says Twilight has had a chequered history. Beezneez presented a trial run of the play in The Dock, Carrick on Shannon in October 2019 and such was the positive audience reaction that a national tour was immediately scheduled for Spring 2020.

That tour went the way of everything else and the tour that was subsequently scheduled for Spring 2021 fell to the same fate so Beezneez are keeping everything crossed that this tour will finally get the play the audience it deserves.

The playwright says that Twilight is a reflective play which mirrors the way he currently feels, having emerged from lockdown.

Two old friends meet for the first time for over thirty five years. Why have they not met in all that time and why are they meeting now?

If there are issues between them will they succeed in resolving them? Even though the play is leavened by examples of the playwright’s wit, there are serious matters in play here and much food for thought is provided.

Twilight provides an opportunity to catch two All-Ireland winning Actors, John McDwyer (Educating Rita) and Tom Walsh (The Communication Cord) at the top of their game and this is surely a night of pure theatre not to be missed.

Twilight plays in Backstage Theatre on Thurs 24th Feb at 8pm. Tickets €16/€14 available on 0433347888 or
