Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy
Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed a statement from Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue stating that social distancing rules are now lifted at livestock marts.
Facemaks must be worn at Marts for now but all other Covid 19 restrictions have been lifted.
"I want to pay tribute to Mart Managers and staff and the farming community for their co-operation throughout the past few years" he said.
"We now have almost a return to normality in our marts and many will welcome this.
"Online sales can continue as part of a blended approach and some farmers may decide to keep on doing that. There is no doubt that farmers in the Roscommon/Galway region as well as farmers throughout the Country through their cooperation played a key role in reducing the threat of Covid 19 in out communities thus saving lives and also helped protect Ireland's food security."
