Longford County Library, Heritage and Archives Services will host the opening of a very interesting exhibition entitled ‘A History of Longford Town through Maps’ on Tuesday, February 27.

The exhibition has been prepared by Martin Morris, County Archivist, and is based on the Longford fascicle of the ‘Irish Historic Towns Atlas’ by Sarah Gearty, Martin Morris and Fergus O’Ferrall, which was published in 2010.

The Atlas traces the town’s history with particular reference to a number of maps produced from the 1600s onwards.

“Longford has a long history, going back at least 800 years and maps are great in telling the story of the town,” Martin Morris told the Leader.
“Some of the maps in the Atlas are in private ownership and this exhibition will allow us to highlight them,” he continued.

The opening will take place at 8pm on Tuesday in Longford Library and will include a talk by Sarah Gearty, Royal Irish Academy, and Martin Morris.

The exhibition will remain in the library for three weeks.
