The launch of the Lough Ree Angling Festival took place along the banks of the River Shannon in Lanesboro last Saturday morning.

A provisional schedule of eight international competitions are already planned for the lake over the next 12 months with the staging of the successful coarse angling competition at the popular hot water stretch in Lanesboro, and at the Kilnacarrow Bridge.

“This competition will attract anglers from all over the UK and Ireland to Longford and Roscommon on the June bank holiday weekend,” said Philip Gordon, Secretary, Lough Ree Angling Hub.

The Lanesboro and Ballyleague harbours and marinas will also host the 2nd annual Lough Ree International Pike Classic on June 23 & 24.

“We are delighted to be working again with the Camlin & District Angling club, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Roscommon and Longford County Council, the EU Leader companies, ESB, Bord na Mona, local landowners and the local community to help run these events,” added Mr Gordon

“We have grown all our competitions year on year and we are now pleased to confirm plans are well advanced for a major new initiative on angling and the islands of Lough Ree here”.

Meanwhile, the new project centres on a proposal to open a new Lough Ree Islands and Anglers Visitors Centre in the area, an initiative where tourists will be able to avail of information and support services for all types of angling, heritage and water sports activities.

“The Angling Hub will also be facilitating the fishing festivals this year with a new PA system and outdoor presentation suite this summer,” Mr Gordon continued.

“This new presentation suite will be very valuable for the staging of all our events here and we look forward to further growing the angling tourism market.”

Entries for the two fishing festivals are now open - the International Coarse fishing Festival takes place on from Friday, June 1 - Sunday, June 3 and entry forms are available from loughreeanglinghub@gmail.com.

The Lough Ree International Pike Classic takes place on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24 with entry forms available from Camlinanglers@gmail.com and loughreeanglinghub@gmail.com.
