Sadness over death of well known local farmer

The entire community of Ballinalee and surrounding north Longford parishes have been plunged into shock and sadness tonight following the death of a well known local farmer following an on-farm accident earlier this evening.

The man, who is in his 60s, was born and reared in Gelsha, just outside the village of Ballinalee and he also worked as a bus driver.

Speaking to  tonight, Ballinalee-based Longford County Council member, Cllr Michéal Carrigy (FG) conveyed his deepest sympathies to the dead man's wife and family and said the deceased was a popular and highly respected member of the local community.

"This was a tragic accident and we are all very shocked," said Cllr Carrigy, who added that the man was from a hardworking and respectable family.

Cllr Carrigy added, "He lived in Gelsha all his life, farmed his land and worked for Bus Éireann. Both he and his family are very well known and they are very highly respected members of our community."

Cllr Carrigy went on to say that the entire community was in shock over the "tragic accident" and offered his sympathies to the family.
