A man in his 30s was assaulted in Longford Town last night and he is being treated in hospital for serious injuries.
It is understood the stabbing occurred in the Chapel Lane area of the county town at about 8.15pm.
Gardaí received a report of a public order incident at around 8:20pm and emergency services rushed to the scene.
Officers have appealed for anyone who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the Chapel Lane area to contact them.
A Garda spokesman said, "A man aged in his 30s was assaulted and is being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin.
"No other injuries reported at this time."
Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the Chapel Lane area on Wednesday, January 28 between 8pm and 9pm to make this footage available to investigating officers.
Gardaí have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries today and they said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
