Cian McPhillips crossing the finishing line in Boston
A blistering 25-seconds final 200 metres saw Cian McPhillips claim victory with a very impressive performance at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston on Saturday.
The Longford athlete opened his season when lining up in the men’s 600 metres in what was his first track race since September’s World Championships 800m final in Tokyo.

Coming up against some top US middle distance athletes, Cian once again showed his class with a brilliant run. Sitting fourth after 400m of the three-lap race, he made his move around the bend before hitting the front down the back straight. He powered on towards the finish winning in 1:16.37 ahead of America’s Donovan Brazier, a former world champion.
Cian had spent almost a month training at high altitude in Arizona before last week travelling to Boston. He will move back up to the 800m distance at next Sunday’s Millrose Games in New York. Meet Director of this prestigious event in upper Manhattan is Longford’s own Ray Flynn.
Ardagh native Cian will look to put in another high-quality display as he seeks to achieve the qualifying standard for the World Indoor Championships in March.
Watch the Millrose Games: The men’s 800m will be at 10.25pm (Irish time) on Sunday February 1. A free to access live stream will be available on the World Athletics website.
