Massive €3 million funding boost for county Longford cycling project

Longford has been allocated €3million for an Active Travel project

Funding of €3 million has been allocated to Longford County Council for cycling infrastructure.

The money will will facilitate the development of a cycleway at Templemichael from the Camlin Bridge to the Mall in Longford town.

The cycleway network in the Templemichael area is an important part of a significant active travel investment with the intention of improving safety and connectivity for schools and residential areas.

The proposed project has been described as an "approximate 19m long, single-span, prefabricated pedestrian / cyclist bridge to extend over the River Camlin and existing Templemichael bridge abutments, resting on two newly formed concrete abutments".

The development is also said to include a "450m long, two-metre wide pedestrian and two-metre-wide cycleway connections on either side of the existing service road, extending from proposed bridge embankment to junction with N63 Ballinalee Road (N63), and to include tabletop crossing area and public lighting".

Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien has recently announced €360 million in Government funding for Active Travel and Greenways for this year.

Leitrim is set to receive almost €3.5 million, consisting of €200,000 for a town junction upgrade in Drumshanbo, and for an Active Travel link in Carrigallen costing €190,000.
