The work of Longford Community Resources Ltd’s Drop-in Centre has been highlighted by a group established to promote local mental health support services.
Lorna McGoey of Longford Mental Health Awareness, which was set up earlier this year, said she only learned of the centre’s existence by chance.
“A group of us who wanted to do something about local services were having regular meetings,” she explained. “People were asking us for help on Facebook, so I decided to compile a list of services; there wasn’t much available.
“We knew we needed a proper drop-in to point people in the right direction,” she added. “Then I saw a link for the LCRL Drop-in Centre posted on Longford Integeration’s Facebook page. I contacted them and they said they could help people suffering from all manner of issues.”
Josephine Sto ker of the Drop-in Centre, which is located at Garvey’s Yard in Longford town, outlined what it offers: “It’s a friendly place for people to drop in, have a cup of tea and a chat, and be referred to other local services if needed. People with all sorts of mental health issues and addictions are welcome.”
Ms Stoker added that the centre also offers counselling services on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
“With additional funding, we could increase this to five days and have evening and weekend cover, too,” she said. “Longford Mental Health Awareness have rowed-in now to help us expand.”
