Ballymahon Traders Association and Ballymahon Development Group will host a commemorative 1916 Heritage Day at the town’s public library on Saturday, August 29.

The event is among the first in a series of remembrance celebrations which are expected to take place in County Longford between now and the end of 2016.

The Heritage Day will begin at 11am with a country market, which will take place in the environs of the library, while fun for all the family is promised at a Teddy Bear’s Picnic in the playground on the Old Workhouse Road from 1pm to 2.30pm.

A parade led by marching bands will march from the Creevaghbeg Road at 3pm, and this will be followed by a reading of Padraig Pearse’s 1915 graveside oration for Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa outside the library. This will be followed by the raising of the Irish tricolour.

Music will be provided by the marching band and by local group Tanglewood, while more bands will busk on the street and in local pubs later in the evening.
