Excitement building for launch of fascinating new history book ‘County Longford Explored’

The publication features selection of essays from Longford’s most prolific historian Dr O’ Ferrall

Longford County Library, Archives, Arts and Heritage Services will host the launch of Dr Fergus O'Ferrall's book ‘County Longford Explored: Irish history in the hidden heartland ‘in Longford Library on Thursday, November 6 at 7.30pm.

The launch will be performed by the Most Rev. Dr Paul Connell, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise.

The event is being held in association with County Longford Historical Society, which has jointly published the book, along with Geography Publications. Longford County Council has also provided funding towards the publication.

A Kenagh native, Dr O'Ferrall is Longford’s most prolific historian.

A well-known expert on Daniel O’Connell and the campaign for Catholic Emancipation, Dr O’ Ferrall has written books on both subjects.

This book brings together his essays on many topics related to Longford, written over a period of almost fifty years.

The publication also features a number of essays on land ownership and society in Moydow barony, the ‘Ballinamuck Land War’, the campaign for Catholic Emancipation in the county, as well as some great County Longford writers such as Oliver Goldsmith and Maria Edgeworth.

The foreword is written by Prof Roy Foster, Emeritus Carroll Professor of Irish History at Oxford University.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh said, “This book is the product of many years of research into our local history and Longford County Council is pleased to have been able to provide support towards the publication.”

Paddy Mahon, Chief Executive of Longford County Council, recognising the long-term value of the book added, “The quality of ‘County Longford Explored’ will ensure that it will become an essential work for anyone interested in the county’s history, both now and in the future.”

Speaking on behalf of the historical society, Chairperson Pat Donnelly, praised Fergus O’Ferrall’s work saying, “Dr O’Ferrall is a life member of our society, and he continues to make a huge contribution to local history in Longford. We are delighted to support this very important publication.”

‘County Longford Explored’ will be available at a special launch price of €35 on Thursday, 6 November and thereafter it will be for sale in local outlets and directly from the Historical Society.
