Over €300,000 funding available to Longford to build low carbon communities

Longford County Council has announced that applications for the Community Climate Action Programme Strand 1: Building Low Carbon Communities will open on Tuesday, 28 October with €328,000 in funding available to community groups across the county.

The programme offers up to 100% funding to assist communities—whether small or large, rural, or urban—in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy production, and improving energy efficiency.

Nature-based projects that enhance biodiversity and support climate resilience are also welcome.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Cllr Garry Murtagh said, "This funding represents a real opportunity for communities across County Longford to take practical steps towards a sustainable future.

"We've already seen the difference these projects make—not just in reducing emissions, but in bringing people together around a common purpose. I encourage every community group to consider how they can be part of this change."

Chief Executive of Longford County Council Paddy Mahon added, "The results speak for themselves. Communities that have received funding are seeing their electricity costs cut significantly, whilst creating spaces and facilities that benefit everyone.

"This programme puts the power directly in the hands of local people to shape their own low carbon future, and Longford County Council is committed to supporting them every step of the way."

Previous projects funded under this programme have delivered significant results. Clonguish GAA received €62,731 for a windows and doors retrofit, whilst Longford Athletics Club was approved for €38,770 for solar PV installation.

Ballymahon Tidy Towns Group secured €16,561 for multiple initiatives including Christmas light replacements, a rambling orchard along the River Inny and Royal Canal Walk, and bike facilities.

Approved projects focusing on electricity reduction have achieved remarkable outcomes, with average reductions of 48–50% in electricity costs compared to the previous year.

Eligible applicants must be not-for-profit organisations based in County Longford, registered with the Longford Public Participation Network, and able to demonstrate tax compliance and governance structures.

Applications close at 1pm on 22 December 2025.
