A local councillor has said he is very pleased that there has been a positive update in relation to the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing at Lenamore NS Legan in the interest of public safety.
Fine Gael Councillor Paul Ross asked Longford County Council during the August meeting of Ballymahon Municipal District to investigate the possibility of installing a raised pedestrian crossing as he said it was urgently needed.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Mick Cahill who said it was an excellent motion and it was supported unanimously by local representatives.
Cllr Ross recalled how there was a minor incident in the village in recent times involving a child and a car in the area, but thankfully the child did not suffer any significant injuries.
However, he stressed it was a warning.
"It brought to the fore how dangerous the middle of the village is.
"It's a very good road surface with a school, a shop, a church, a GAA pitch, a housing estate and it's prone to children crossing the road, maybe sometimes without due care and attention."
Cllr Ross said he was pleased to hear during the Ballymahon Municipal District meeting that a proposed design has went to public consultation and two pedestrian crossings and funding is being allocated under the Active Travel scheme.
"This is going to install two raised pedestrian crossings, one at the school and one at the entrance to the housing estate.
"That will slow down traffic in the centre of the village, which is exactly what we are looking for so it is greatly welcomed."
