Longford District Court
A 25 year-old Longford man who assaulted two men and caused nearly €300 worth of damage to a house during a row that was triggered by the occupants refusal to allow him inside, has been remanded on bail and ordered to attend the December 16 sitting of Longford District Court.
Oisin Doyle of 28 Springlawn, County Longford, was also given three months to pay €400 to the poor box and must complete 120 hours of community service in lieu of four months imprisonment.
The decision to impose community service was made following an assessment by the probation officer as ordered by the court on the day of the sitting.
Mr Doyle, a factory worker, stands accused of having assaulted two men and causing damage to a house in Longford’s Prospect Woods on July 16, 2023.
The incident occurred when Mr Doyle arrived at the house following a night out.
The court heard how an argument broke out at the address during which Mr Doyle struck a man’s head with his fists, assaulting the second man in the same manner.
The destruction to the property was to the tune of €200 worth of damage to a Smart TV, €50 worth of damage to the hinges of the front door, €15 of damage to a table lamp, and €10 worth of damage to a shoe rack.
Acknowledging that her client was intoxicated when he arrived at the house, defence solicitor, Ms Bríd Mimnagh, explained that her client, “doesn’t take drugs, just drink.”
“Well it would seem drink doesn’t agree with him either,” Judge Bernadette Owens remarked in response.
“He went to a party at his ex-girlfriend’s house, except he hadn’t been let in…,” to which Judge Owens interjected, “Oh he got in alright!”
Sergeant for the state, Enda Daly informed the court that Mr Doyle had six previous convictions.
He also said the victims involved had declined to give impact statements.
Addressing the court, Ms Mimnagh said that Mr Doyle had since re-established stability in his life and had begun working in a factory.
“He is happy to move on with his life and deal with things,” she said.
Ms Mimnagh also submitted €300 to the court on behalf of Mr Doyle by way of compensation.
Upon receiving confirmation from the probation officer regarding Mr Doyle’s suitability for community service, Judge Owens said if Mr Doyle complied with the order set in place by court, he would be spared further repercussions.
Mr Doyle will appear at the December 16 sitting of Longford District Court.
