Longford care service with 'person centred' approach receives glowing HIQA report

Esker Gardens is designed for up to four residents and provides care for clients with physical, neurological and sensory impairments

A county Longford care service has received significant praise following a recent unannounced HIQA inspection and been lauded for their 'person-centred approach'.

The inspection report arising from an assessment on May 6 last found that Esker Gardens, which can accommodate up to four residents and provides long term care, 24-hour care, was 'Compliant' in all 18 regulatory areas.

Esker Gardens is designed for up to four residents and provides care for clients with physical, neurological and sensory impairments.

The service, which is located on the outskirts of Ballinalee, is run by Orchard Care, a private company that renders support to children and adults with significant and complex needs.

HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority) inspectors spoke to staff, residents and family members on the day.

The report stated that residents, who were supported to maintain their independence and make choices as individuals, lived a meaningful and comfortable life.

A judgment of compliant means the provider and or the person in charge is in full compliance with the relevant regulation.

The centre was deemed to be compliant in relation to staffing, training and staff development, insurance, governance and management, statement of purpose, communication, personal possessions, general welfare and development and the premises Edker Gardens was also adjudged to be compliant in terms of food and nutrition, information for residents, risk management procedures, fire precautions, medicines and pharmaceutical services, health care, protection and residents' rights.

"From meeting residents, observing staff interacting with residents, and speaking to the person in charge and staff members, it was evident that residents were well supported in the centre, and there was person-centred approach to care and support," the report outlined.

The HIQA report stated the inspector met all the residents living in the centre, and spoke to one resident about what it was like to live in the centre, and about how they were supported.

"The resident told the inspector that they had developed an interest in art since moving into the centre, and a number of their paintings were on display throughout the centre."

Another resident told the inspector they had recently got highlights in their hair and this was a personal goal for them.
Staff supported the resident with a community activity in the afternoon.

The report stated the "person in charge told the inspector this resident really enjoyed going out for tea, to the beauticians and hairdresser, and going shopping, and from reviewing reports and finance records, it was evident that these interests were regularly facilitated".
