Sabina Higgins lends her support to National Famine Walk for Palestine Picture: Brian Farrell
Sabina Higgins was on hand to lend her support to participants in the National Famine Walk for Palestine.
From August 2 to August 9, a group of people from Boyle Palestinian Solidarity Group and other County Roscommon solidarity groups will walk the 165 km National Famine Way from Strokestown Park at the National Famine Museum to the Famine Memorial Statues in Dublin Docklands in solidarity with the people of Palestine.
This historic trail retraces the journey of the Strokestown 1490: men, women and children forced to walk from Roscommon to Dublin in 1847 after eviction during the Great Irish Famine. Upon arrival in Dublin, they boarded ships bound for Liverpool and on to North America. Many did not survive the voyage. Today, they are remembered as the Missing 1490.

“We walk this same path now because we recognise the suffering of others. What happened to our ancestors is happening to Palestinians today — forced displacement, starvation, and grief,” said a group spokesperson. “This is a walk of remembrance, resistance and humanity.”
Our walk is an act of solidarity with Palestinians enduring horrific conditions in Gaza and beyond. We invite everyone along the route to join us. Walk a day, a mile, or simply come out and show support with your presence.
We are also encouraging donations to the TEA Initiative, which provides humanitarian aid on the ground in Palestine.
