A decision of the outcome of an application for a Family Resource Centre for Longford town is now expected in late Sept /early Oct, according  to local Senator, Joe Flaherty.

The Longford Senator met with Minister Norma Foley recently and was advised that there are currently 49 applications with Tusla but only five applications will be successful. Said Senator Flaherty: “My understanding  is that Tusla will give the Dept  a shortlist of ranked projects based on the merits of the applications and the Dept will then finalise their funding decision.”

The news comes as the local steering  committee  for the Longford FRC, today (Wednesday)  launches its needs assessment report for a FRC in Longford town.

A successful Longford facility plans outreach services to Edgeworthstown, and would provide a central hub for individuals and families to access support services, information, and resources, in a safe, inclusive and stigma-free environment. This would foster a more connected, integrated, and supportive community, benefiting people across all age groups and backgrounds.

Added Senator Flaherty: “We have been conscious of the glaring  need for a family resource  centre in Longford town – replicating the successes of similar facilities in Ballymahon and Granard. It was crucial to secure €88m for the Children & Family Support Programme in Budget 2025 and the next step is ensuring that the Longford project  is one of the five chosen.”

He added: “I am aware of a very strong application  from the Longford group but the next few weeks are critical in terms of ensuring that Longford is amongst the five chosen and not the 44 that won’t proceed.”
