A Longford man, who was detected driving significantly above the speed limit and failed to pay a fixed charge penalty notice, has been convicted and received a hefty fine.

David Kelly of GoSafe said a speed check was in operation at Granard Hill, Granard on December 7, 2024 when a motorist was detected travelling at 104kph in a 60kph zone shortly after 5pm.
Mr Kelly said the information was uploaded onto the system when he returned to the depot and a fixed charge penalty notice fine was issued to the defendant, but it went unpaid.
Sergeant Mark Mahon also handed a copy of the fine and the certificate of postage to Judge Peter White.
The defendant had no previous convictions.

Judge Peter White considered the circumstances and he imposed a €500 fine with five months to pay.
"The rationale there is he was doing 104kph in a 60kph zone, which is quite a high speed in that area."
