Footpaths in Longford ‘have been a problem for the past ten years’

The topic of footpaths came up at a recent meeting of Longford Municipal District

According to Cllr Martin Monaghan ‘footpaths have been a problem for the past ten years’ in the Longford Municipal District area.

He was speaking following a presentation from Peter Brady, Senior Executive Engineer, Longford MD on the proposed Footpath Programme over the coming years.

A number of areas were highlighted as being in need of improvement work, including along the Drumlish Road, locations in Newtownforbes, as well as Castlepark.

Proposing that the programme be approved, Cllr Gerry Hagan thanked Mr Brady and the staff for the commendable programme over the next three years.

“It’s great to see the work near the Red Cow since the footpath there is in a precarious condition. There is one issue with lorries parking on the left side. We might need bollards to alleviate this problem.

"I wish Peter and the team the best of luck. You’ve my full support. I’d like to propose the programme to be passed.”

Cllr Seamus Butler also lent his support to the programme. “I concur. A husband told me that his wife cannot manage a wheelchair on the footpath outside their home. It has to be done.”

“The paths have been a problem for the past ten years,” suggested Cllr Monaghan. “Even some footpaths from seven-to-ten years have disintegrated. I hope we get this up and running.”
