Law Society invites Longford residents to learn about artificial intelligence

Longford residents are invited to join the Law Society’s free course exploring artificial intelligence (AI). The on-demand course starts online on 10 June.

How can AI make my life easier? Can I trust AI? What will AI look like in the future? These questions and more will be answered for Longford residents during the five-week course.

The course will offer Longford residents an opportunity to delve into the world of AI, to better understand its benefits and challenges, learn what AI can be used for now and in the future, and to become with familiar with issues surrounding data security, ethical concerns and economic consequences.

President of the Law Society, Eamon Harrington, said: “AI is a rapidly developing area and is already influencing many areas of our daily lives. Understanding the significant impact AI is having on individuals, businesses, the justice sector and wider society, is the first step in effectively using it.”

What will I learn?

“You don’t need to have prior knowledge about AI to get something from this course. Instead, it aims to remove the mystery and instil confidence in understanding the scope and power of AI tools.

“It will provide a foundational overview of AI and will also consider the impact AI may have within organisations, explore the considerable impact on society, examine AI regulation, and look at how AI can be applied in our daily lives.”

Public Legal Education

The five-week free online course is run as one of the Law Society’s many Public Legal Education initiatives and aims to increase awareness of the law by teaching people about our legal system and how law impacts on society.

“The Law Society is proud to continue to offer accessible legal education for the public,” said Mr Harrington.

“This AI course is open to anyone and everyone, anywhere in the world. From school children upwards, if you have an interest in learning about AI and its influence on wider society, you are invited to take part, and upskill, for free, this summer.”

Online education

Since the first Law Society Massive Open Online Course in 2014, over 34,000 people have registered from 119 countries. Each year, the five-week long online course focuses on a different topic as it relates to the law and is open to all, with notable past speakers including Mary Robinson and Leo Varadkar.

The course is presented in short videos and presentations, quizzes and online activities with new course content released every Tuesday. The course is on-demand making it easy for participants to catch up at any stage.
