Senator Joe Flaherty: ‘Critical we ensure Longford town’s inclusion’

Longford Senator Joe Flaherty has welcomed the announcement by Tusla, the Child and Family Agency of the opening of the application process, for five new Family Resource Centres (FRCs) nationwide.

He said: “The success of FRCs in Granard and Ballymahon have long highlighted the absence of a similar facility for Longford town and we have waited almost a decade for this call for applications.”

A network of FRCs have been active in Ireland for over 20 years and have a significant impact locally, regionally and nationally.

FRCs impact on the lives of children, families, individual adults including older people and whole communities because of their human rights-based approach to community development across the life-course.

Their progressive approach means they provide empowering, non-stigmatising supports for all the community but also more targeted supports to those who need it most.

Senator Flaherty added, “I championed additional funding to expand the FRC network in Budget  2025 and this will allow an additional five FRCs nationally and it is critical we ensure Longford town’s inclusion.”

The Senator also commended Longford County Council and the Community Partnership team who have done a considerable body of work in anticipation of this announcement.
