Longford judge quips 'I hope he's not putting in my fibre broadband' as she hears man buys cannabis in bulk

A defendant who admitted possession of €800 worth of cannabis for his own use was fined €500 at Longford District Court.

Daniel Webster (31) of 17 Tara Drive, Gortnahoe, Tipperary pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of cannabis on March 7, 2025 at Market Square, Longford.

Sergeant Enda Daly Gardaí stopped and spoke to the defendant as he was coming out of a premises on Market Square. Mr Webster presented the officers with a tinfoil wrap containing €50 worth of cannabis, he then threw another item into the rear of a pick up vehicle. The officers retrieved the item which was €750 worth of cannabis.

Mr Webster had eight previous convictions, one of which was for drug possession. Solicitor Bríd Mimnagh said her client works installing fibre broadband.

Ms Mimnagh said all the cannabis was for the defendants own use, and stated he does not sell it, but buys it in bulk.

Remarking on the volume of cannabis for Mr Webster's own use Judge Bernadette Owens remarked: “How does he manage to work at all? I hope he's not putting in my fibre broadband.”

The judge registered a conviction and imposed a fine of €500 with six months to pay for the first offence.

 The second charge was taken into consideration. Judge Owens issued a destruction order for the drugs.
