Suspended sentence for Longford man who stole trousers and alcohol

A defendant who stole alcohol and trousers has received a two month suspended prison sentence.


Patrick Stokes of 80 MacEoin Park, Longford pleaded guilty at the local district court to the theft offences.


Sergeant Mark Mahon said on November 14, 2024 the defendant entered Tesco in Longford at 9.10pm and he stole beer valued at €21.50 and trousers valued at €32 and left without paying for the items that were not recovered.

Sgt Mahon said Mr Stokes also went to Lidl in Longford on November 17, 2024 and he stole a €20 bottle of vodka, which was returned in a resaleable condition.


The court heard Stokes has 23 previous convictions.


Solicitor John Quinn said his client wants to attend Cuan Mhuire treatment centre and deal with his addiction and repay the €53.50 to Tesco.

Judge Bernadette Owens imposed a two month prison sentence for the November 14, 2024 offence which she suspended for a 12-month period.


She did not finalise the November 17, 2024 matter and requested a probation report.

Mr Stokes was remanded on bail and the case was adjourned until July 8 next.
