AMC Developments Ltd seeking permission to construct 42 houses
Longford is to benefit from €2 million in funding as part of a major €436 million national investment in social housing announced this week.
The funding, which includes both support for new-build social housing projects and the acquisition of second-hand homes, is aimed at increasing housing supply and tackling homelessness across the country.
Fine Gael TD for Longford-Westmeath, Deputy Micheál Carrigy (pictured) said, “This is welcome news for Longford, where the need for social and affordable housing continues to grow.
The €2 million allocation will enable Longford County Council to deliver much-needed homes locally, ensuring that families and individuals in housing need are supported in our communities.”
Under the programme, local authorities are being supported to deliver new-build projects and to acquire second-hand homes for use as social housing.
This includes purchases to support tenant-in-situ arrangements, older persons, people with disabilities, and those exiting homelessness.
“The flexibility given to councils in how they use these funds is also crucial,” Deputy Carrigy added. “It means Longford County Council can respond directly to the most urgent needs on the ground—whether that’s keeping tenants in their homes, addressing disability housing needs, or tackling vacancy through buy-and-renew schemes.”
Nationally, the €436 million package includes; €111 million for 82 new social housing construction projects which will deliver over 1,300 homes by 2027, with 575 of those to be delivered in 2025.
And €325 million in capital allocations to local authorities for the targeted purchase of second-hand homes.
