A defendant who was in possession of a small quantity of cannabis when searched by Gardai was fined €250 at Longford District Court.
Conor Shanley (26) of Ballymackeegan, Longford faced a charge that he was unlawfully in possession of cannabis at St Michael's Road, Longford.
Outlining details of the matter Sergeant Mark Mahon said that on Monday, August 5, 2024 at 4:45pm the defendant was searched and found to be in possession of a small quantity of cannabis.
The sergeant said that the defendant had cooperated fully with the Gardaí and immediately admitted ownership of the drug. The court heard Mr Shanley had seven previous convictions, two of which were for simple possession.
Solicitor Frank Gearty explained to the court that his client was “going through a bad spell at the time”.
Mr Gearty informed the judge that Mr Shanley had compulsions, and referred to a previous conviction where the defendant was prosecuted for trespassing having climbed onto a roof.
Noting the facts of the matter Judge Bernadette Owens recorded a conviction and imposed a fine of €250, giving the defendant five months to pay.
