Garda Rachel Carlin noted the insurance was in order, however, the tax had expired over a year previously in January 2022.
Garda Carlin subsequently spoke to the defendant and she seized the vehicle.

The defendant was arrested and a blood sample was taken at Longford Garda Station which tested positive for cannabis.

A fixed charge penalty notice fine was issued for the tax but it went unpaid.

Mr Conlon had a previous conviction in 2009 but no driving related previous convictions.

Solicitor Frank Gearty said his client, a Dubliner who moved to county Roscommon, was extremely sorry and he had been returning home after a wedding.

"If it hadn't been for his friend who shared the cannabis and left down the butt there wouldn't be the reeking smell when the Gardaí came to the scene and he might never have come to attention," he said.

"This is a disaster for Mr Conlon, a father of three who coaches extensively in the community."

Mr Gearty asked for any disqualification to be postponed until August so his client could get his affairs in order.

Judge Bernadette Owens agreed to defer the ban until July 1 and she imposed a €500 fine with six months to pay.
