North Midlands Credit Union was delighted to welcome Minister Robert Troy to the Mullingar Branch recently.
Deputy Troy is the Minister of State at the Department of Finance with Responsibility for Financial Services, Credit Unions and Insurance.
It was his first official engagement with credit unions since his recent appointment following the formation of the new Government.

On Friday, February 28, Minister Troy together with officials from the Department of Finance met with the management, staff, board members and volunteers of the North Midlands Credit Union together with officials from Credit Union representative bodies and representatives of 15 neighbouring credit unions from Westmeath, Longford and neighbouring counties for a wide ranging roundtable discussion on credit union matters.
The Government has set out ambitious targets for the credit union sector in its new programme for Government and the Minister is keen to make early progress on these. Minister Troy wanted to hear firsthand from credit unions on their plans to provide more and better services for their members and how this could be supported by Government.
Issues covered in a wide ranging debate included:

* The ongoing implementation of new credit union legislation which will allow greater collaboration among credit unions and create further opportunities for credit unions to compete more effectively in mortgage and SME lending.* The proposed expansion of lending limits by the Central Bank.
* Credit Union plans to develop a nationwide mortgage offering.
* Expansion of lending in SME and Agriculture.
* The uncompetitive high levels of capital and liquidity that credit unions are required to hold.
* How Government can support credit unions in their digital transition and adopting new technologies.
* The development of a five year strategy for the credit union sector and how this can be developed in collaboration between credit unions and the Government
