A Longford town driver, who was caught driving while disqualified and without insurance, has received a suspended prison sentence.
Gerard Moran of 106 McKeown Park pleaded guilty to the offences at Teffia Park in Longford town on July 17, 2022.
Sergeant Mark Moran said Gardaí carried out a checkpoint at 8pm and the defendant was asked for his licence, which he did not have.
"He stated his name was Edward Moran and on checking they found that this was an incorrect name and they carried out a check on the vehicle and they established who the owner of the vehicle was," the court presenter added.
Gardaí arrested him and they confirmed his name was Gerard Moran."
Further enquiries were made into the defendant, a father of two, and it was discovered a three year driving ban was imposed in June 2020.
Mr Moran had 17 previous convictions, including three for no insurance.
Solicitor Bríd Mimnagh said her client is no longer driving and he is currently working in Germany as an engineering fitter.
She said he wished to apologise and he knew he was at 'significant risk'.
The court heard Mr Moran has his own business which employs seven people and if he was sent to prison they would lose their jobs.
Judge Bernadette Owens imposed a five month jail term which was suspended for 18-months.
