Next Wednesday Backstage Theatre welcomes a ferociously exhilarating performance of pure dance and live music.
This performance has garnered rave reviews in every venue it has been performed in from The Abbey in Dublin to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Acclaimed choreographer Emma Martin presents her work in Longford for the first time with Night Dances, an ode to the body and a visceral, sweaty love letter to dance in all its forms.
Presented in a series of four vignettes, the work is a celebration of dance culture – from clubs to competitions to ceremonies.
Performed to pounding beats by Daniel Fox and with atmospheric lighting by Stephen Dodd, it opens with a solo and accelerates as a young dance troupe launches into a ferocious routine of kicks, flips and cartwheels.
A brief respite is offered up in a second solo that magnifies every movement, before surging to a close with unbridled fervour.
Through raucous choreography and rumbling bass that reverbs in your belly, Night Dances revels in fury, rebellion, hope and freedom. It unleashes the exhilaration of getting lost in your own rhythm where nothing else matters, just the sweat and the groove.
Night Dances is a love letter to dance in 4 parts:
LOST BOY
A solo for a male dancer. Inspired by the story where Lucifer is God’s lover thrown down from heaven with only God’s voice echoing “go to hell.” The echo was all he had left to sustain him. Heroic. Mythical. Pitiful. Monstrous. Humble. Soft. Majestic. A swan in an oil slick.
GOD IS A GIRL
Five young girls with bright eyes, blood pumping together, dancing their hearts out. They whip their limbs and ponytails out into the world like it’s their last breath. The most potent of life stages distilled into powerful physicality—all fury, might, and faith. They’re the future and they're fearless.
THE RAVER
“When the soul of a man is born in this country, there are nets flung at it to hold it back from flight... I shall try to fly by those nets.” (James Joyce)
RED
A trio of women. For all the birds, ma’s, bitches, hags, wans, slags, babes, frumps. For our mams and grannies. Messy, loud, animal, reckless, violent, beautiful, filthy. Like seeing the virgin Mary swagger by on a white stallion smoking a vape.
Don't miss this chance to see an international standard dance performance in Longford.
Presented by United Fall the running time for the show is around 60 mins, with no interval. This is an over 12 show and takes place this Wednesday, March 5, at 8:00pm, tickets costing €20 and €18 are available at the Backstage box office.
