Thank you: Event should be organised to thank Longford crews and volunteers who responded to Storm Éowyn

Cllr Turlough McGovern: "I want to extend the warmest thanks to everyone involved in helping out, from the GAA clubs to resource centres all over our county."

There was a call for a 'Thank you' evening event to show gratitude to local authority staff, Longford Civil Defence and emergency services at last week's Longford County Council meeting.

Cathaoirleach Mark Casey said he wanted to organise a 'Thank you' event to show appreciation to everyone who helped local communities after Storm Éowyn.

"On behalf of everyone in Longford the work that was done by Longford County Council, they were just so ready to go when the button was pressed," he added.

Addressing Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon and Barbara Heslin, Director of Services he stated it was a 'tribute' to them and their staff how they responded.

Cllr Casey stated he has family members in the ESB and he is appreciative of the efforts made by their crews, emergency services and people who provided meals.

"I just think we should do a 'Thank you' evening for all the people who were involved in this and we should book somewhere because they have really helped our county," he said. "Our outdoor staff, our civil defence, our fire crews, our community Gardaí helped out delivering meals and I think an appreciation night would be really appropriate.”

Independent Councillor Turlough McGovern (pictured) praised the efforts.

"I want to extend the warmest thanks to everyone involved in helping out, from the GAA clubs to resource centres all over our county," he added.

Cllr McGovern said it was obvious that residents were lost without electricity for so long, and speaking in relation to poles and power, he stated we “are going to ensure we follow up with a back-up plan for that”.
