A judge has heard a Longford motorist, who was caught by Gardaí with drugs in her vehicle, had forgotten about them due to her 'lifestyle'.

Carolanne McGuire (39) of Keelogues, Edgeworthstown, Longford pleaded guilty to the offence at 3.10pm on June 12, 2024 at Moyview, Kenagh, county Longford.

Sgt Enda Daly said the divisional drug unit was on patrol at 3.10pm when the defendant's vehicle was stopped and searched.

During the Garda operation cannabis valued at €30, ecstasy worth €20 and cocaine valued at €80 was discovered.

Sgt Daly said the defendant admitted that the drugs were for her own personal use.

Ms Maguire had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Frank Gearty said the extensive Garda search included the 'back chambers' of the vehicle.

"There was an absolute ocean of memorabilia and in the middle of it all was the cannabis she had totally forgotten about and one of the other substances as well," he said. "It was a lifestyle that had led to this situation."

Mr Gearty said his client is single and she works part-time earning €140 per week as he appealed to Judge Bernadette Owens for an opportunity.

"She would greatly appreciate a chance to come back here and maybe make a payment to the poor box and to show that she means business," she added.

Judge Owens agreed to adjourn the case for several months and the defendant is due to appear again at Longford District Court on May 6 next.
