Longford County Council are seeking permission to turn Longford's Connolly Barracks into a multi purpose community facility which may house a museum, a visual arts space or a welcome centre.


A planning application for the restoration of the historical Officer's Building at the well-known landmark has been submitted.

Some of the suggestions put forward by the Longford public include a museum, a visual arts space and a welcome centre.

Part 8 planning permission is being sought by Longford County Council as they look to develop the historic building.


When the barracks was deactivated in 2009 the 4th Cavalry stationed there were transferred to Athlone.

In October it was announced Longford town is set to benefit from funding of over €199,000 from THRIVE, for development of the former Connolly Barracks, which was de-activated in 2009.
