REVEALED: Number of farm safety inspections carried out in Longford has decreased significantly

There were 1172 inspections carried out in dangerous career sector in 2024

While the number of farm safety inspections conducted nationally has risen dramatically over the past four years, 2021 to 2024 inclusive, the number conducted in county Longford has reduced significantly.

Just 312 inspections were conducted nationally in 2021 with the number carried nationally out over the following three years being 1,022 ; 1,337 and 1,171.

In Longford 21 inspections took place in 2021, 31 in 2022 and 18 in 2023, however, in 2024 the number fell to just 2. 

Deputy Réada Cronin asked the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment at the time the number of farm safety inspections that have taken place in each county over the past four years.

The then Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment said, "farming continues to be one of the most dangerous sectors in which to work".

"The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) continues rolling out its Farm Safety Action Plan 2021- 2024 which aims to reduce the level of fatalities, serious injuries and ill health in the agriculture sector.


The Plan focuses on high-risk activities particularly around the use of tractors and other farm vehicles, livestock handling and working at height. It also aims to improve farmer skill levels around risk identification and management," the then Minister added.

A total of 1171 inspections were carried out in farms across the country last year.

Cork had the highest number of inspections in total, it went from having 5 inspections in 2021 to having 632 inspections in 2024. 

Waterford had the lowest number of inspections, with 25 inspections in the last 3 years.

It had only one inspection last year.

The grand total of inspections from 2021 to 2024 on all farms in the country was 3,842 inspections. 

The Farm Safety Partnership Advisory Committee was established to involve industry stakeholders in improving occupational safety and health in agriculture.
