The Longford Safety and Wellbeing Expo was a huge success seeing organisations from across the county as well as TY students from multiple schools.

Large crowd attends exciting Longford Safety & Wellbeing Expo in Edgeworthstown

The Longford Safety and Wellbeing Expo took place in St Mary’s Campus in Edgeworthstown on Tuesday, November 19.

Kicking off with the Longford Fire Department giving an explosive display on fire safety, demonstrating why water cannot douse some flames.

Multiple local organisations were present at the expo such as the Maria Edgeworth Literary Society, The Mothers Union in Longford and many more.

Schools were out in their droves with TY classes from across the county present to hear and see what safety and wellness groups were on display.

Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Mark Casey opened proceedings and outlined, “There are so many services and groups here today that are offering support guidance and advice. This is important information to help us all improve our ability, our quality of life and improve our sense of community health, and wellbeing.”

Cllr Casey added, “The Longford Community Safety and Wellbeing Expo is about introducing what is available and what Longford County Council provides for the people of Longford and the wellbeing of young people as well.

Chief Executive of Longford County Council Paddy Mahon was also present at the Expo.

“This is a great opportunity to connect with not just the council but all the agencies and to connect with the young people for one thing.

“We’ve got a fantastic crowd here, it’s highly organised with a huge number of different groups and agencies and volunteers here exhibiting.

“And I suppose just providing information to the kids here and their teachers, mainly TY students from around the county and just so they’re aware of all the different services, supports, facilities that are there not just for them but for their families.”

“We have a fantastic speaker, Dr Katriona O'Sullivan so I think everybody is looking forward to hearing what she has to say.”

Dr Katriona O'Sullivan spoke at the Expo and explained why community agencies like the ones on display we're so important. She herself had a tough child hood and upbringing facing a lot of neglect and had parents who were addicts. Now she has a PhD from Trinity College.
