Senator Micheál Carrigy has welcomed the latest milestone in the Granard Motte project, which has received approval from Minister Heather Humphreys and the Department of Rural and Community Development to proceed to the Detailed Design and Tender Documents phase.

This critical step will be completed in 2025, after which a contractor will be procured and appointed to bring this transformative project to life.

The Granard Motte project, first approved for Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) funding in 2018, has secured a total of €2,872,500, covering 75% of the project cost. Fáilte Ireland, as a project partner, is providing match funding of €627,500.

Senator Carrigy emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, “The Granard Motte project represents a tremendous opportunity to enhance tourism and community amenities in our region. This historic site, a national monument, will be transformed into a heritage park on 15 acres, complete with a ‘living’ Norman village and dedicated children’s amenities. It will not only showcase our rich history but also boost local tourism and economic development.”

Senator Carrigy also highlighted the hard work and dedication of Granard Motte Community Enterprise Ltd., whose commitment has been instrumental in driving the vision for this project forward. Their continued efforts, alongside the support of Fáilte Ireland, have been crucial to reaching this significant milestone.

He thanked Longford County Council, Minister Humphreys and the Department for their continued commitment to this vital project and praised the collaborative efforts that are bringing this vision to reality.
