The solicitor of a defendant charged in connection with a violent incident in Longford town has asked to be moved from the prison he is currently on remand in “for his own safety”.

David Joyce (28) of 35 Palace Crescent, Ardnacassa, Longford, appeared at Longford District Court via videolink last week. The defendant had a black eye.

Mr Joyce, one of two defendants charged in connection with a violent incident that took place on a busy morning outside a school, appeared before Judge Bernadette Owens at the sitting.

Martin Keenan (34) of 81 Ardnacassa Avenue, Longford was the first defendant to appear by videolink from Castlerea in connection with the allegations.

Sgt Mahon said the persecution was awaiting directions from the DPP. Solicitor Brid Mimnagh asked the judge if it was possible to transfer Mr Joyce to Castlerea “for his own personal safety and proximity to family” adding that it was “obvious from the look of him” that he was having issues in Cloverhill.
