A full time Memory Assessment Support Service (MASS) for diagnosing dementia will soon be fully operational in Westmeath and Longford.
The HSE has confirmed that 30% of the staffing requirements for the service, which will also cover Longford, have been filled.
The team includes a Clinical Nurse Specialist (1 WTE), a Social Worker (0.5 WTE), an Occupational Therapist (0.5 WTE), and a Grade IV Administration Assistant (1 WTE).
Welcoming the announcement the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke, said: “The team is already providing a Post Diagnostic Dementia Service, which will gradually evolve into a full Memory Assessment and Support Service for the region as more staff are recruited.”
Minister Burke continued: “Plans are ongoing to secure a permanent location for the service in Westmeath. In the meantime, the team is using HSE facilities and conducting home visits to carry out assessments.”
The importance of the service was stressed by the Minister: “This service is crucial for Westmeath, improving healthcare provision for those affected by memory loss, including Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients, while also offering much-needed support to their families.
“Ensuring the best care for the vulnerable in our society is a priority for me. I will continue to advocate for a permanent facility and push for additional resources with the Minister for Health and the HSE,” he said.
In May 2023, the Government announced Mullingar as one of nine locations to receive funding for the development of a full time Memory Assessment and Support Service.
The HSE National Dementia Service continues to work with the Department of Health to secure further funding to enhance the existing service.
