Shoplifter who stole perfume in Longford escapes conviction

The defendant was part of a group of three females who had a bag and worked together to steal the items

A shoplifter who stole perfume has been given the benefit of the Probation Act.

Yasmine Kenna, aged 18, of 4 Tor An Ri Court, Balgaddy, Lucan, Dublin pleaded guilty at Longford District Court on Tuesday to the theft offence.

She was part of a group of three females who had a bag and worked together to steal the items.

Ms Kenna's co-accused were previously dealt with in court last January, but Ms Kenna failed to appear and a bench warrant was issued.

Sergeant Enda Daly, court presenter, outlined that on October 25, 2023 at 3:30pm three females entered Wards Pharmacy, Ballymahon St, Longford and stole perfume to the value of €82 .40.

Sgt Daly said the trio were stopped as they left and the items were recovered in saleable condition.

Judge Bernadette Owns asked Kenna why she did not appear in court previously and she stated that she just decided not to show up.

Solicitor Diarmuid Quinn said his client had left school before completing her Junior Cert and she had faced challenges but she was now actively seeking employment.

Judge Owens took some time to consider the appropriate penalty but subsequently decided to apply the Probation Act.
