Longford Gardaí take action to combat antisocial behaviour on trains

Longford Community Gardaí engaged with commuters and staff on the Sligo to Connolly Train

Longford Gardaí have taken to social media to highlight measures being taken to combat antisocial behaviour on trains.

Operation Twin Track is a collaboration between Iarnród Eireann and Gardaí to tackle problem behaviour on the rail network.

Longford based Gardaí, as part of their regular duties, participated in a patrol on the Sligo/Dublin Connolly line this week, engaging with passengers.

Longford County Council members have raised the issue with Iarnród Eireann in the past, citing anti-social behaviour and intimidation as the most common complaints from service users.

In April 2023 Iarnród Eireann's Communications Manager, Barry Kenny attended a meeting of the local authority to address the issue of anti-social behaviour on the train with members of Longford County Council.

Mr Kenny said the Irish rail operator has established rapid response hubs around the country, including Longford: “Our staff on board have direct contact with Garda station to enable them, in the event of an incident, to respond quickly.”

The Iarnród Eireann's Communications Manager outlined individual measures: “Concerns about the transportation of illegal substances on the train is an area we have worked with Gardai on. We have taken measures, like patrols by sniffer dogs, in conjunction with Gardaí on a national and regional basis.”
