Local LGFA stars officially open Lidl’s brand new Longford store

Longford footballers Caoimhe McCormack, Grace Kenny and Niamh Brady are pictured with store manager Martina Murray this morning (Thursday).

The eagerly awaited opening of Longford town’s new Lidl store took place this morning.

The larger store will employ 14 extra staff and offers customers an enhanced shopping experience. The store will now employ 31 people.

Longford Ladies Gaelic Football Captain Caoimhe McCormack and Vice Captains Niamh Brady and Grace Kenny joined the team at Lidl Longford to cut the ribbon and officially open the store on Dublin Road.

The store has an expanded 1,670sqm sales floor – almost 70% more sales space than the previous store. The modern fit out features high ceilings, wide aisles, an in-store bakery, longer till points, enhanced restrooms and employee facilities and a newly landscaped customer car park with more than 120 spaces including EV charging points.

The first 10 customers in line this morning received complimentary vouchers to shop Lidl’s renowned range of high-quality products at market-leading value and huge savings on middle aisle favourites. Customers were also treated to in-store sampling from Lidl’s long-standing Longford-based baked bread supplier, Panelto Foods, who secured a €22 million contract with the retailer in 2023.

To mark the opening, the store team in Longford welcomed Teresa Gilchriest and Therese O’Shea from local homeless charity Depaul Longford Services to accept a donation of €1,000 in Lidl vouchers.

Speaking at the opening of the new Longford store, Store Manager, Martina Murray said, “We are delighted to be warmly welcomed back by the Longford community and it was amazing to see so many familiar faces through the door this morning.

“As proud supporters of Ladies Gaelic Football since 2016, we were thrilled to have Caoimhe, Niamh and Grace from Longford LGFA to join us in the celebrations and officially open our new store,” Martina stated.

“The store team has been working very hard behind the scenes to get the store up and running, so it’s great to see all our hard work pay off with a successful opening. We hope the local community enjoys their enhanced shopping experience with larger aisles, longer till-points, increased natural lighting and our well-loved bakery with freshly baked breads and pastries available every day,” Martina added.

Lidl first opened in Longford in November 2000 and since then has become an integral part of the local community.

Lidl Ireland currently employs more than 6,000 employees in its 179 stores, Head Office in Tallaght and three distribution centres and regional offices based in Charleville, Mullingar, and Newbridge.
