Boherquill Ramblers

The Ramblers luck with the weather held again last Sunday. On a day when fog lingered in many areas, keeping temperatures cool and the air damp, the group walked in Coolamber in sunshine with just a hint of warmth to encourage them, although ice still covered some of the pools beside the track. Their circuit of Coolamber Manor Demesne took in forest, meadow and farm roads in what was just a short walk for a short winter's day, but there were points of interest along the way such as the ingenious seed feeders for the pheasant which are raised by the local Wildlife Club. Around 30 new and established members followed the route, led by Maura McLoughlin. Details of future events and activities were discussed as the Ramblers tucked into their usual post-walk refreshments outside the gates to the Coolamber demesne.

On next Sunday, January 23rd, the Ramblers will walk in Knockdrin, near Mullingar. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and pause at Donnelly's petrol station at Lees Cross on the Mullingar to Castlepollard road at 1.50pm before meeting at Clonkill GAA Club at 2pm. This will be a road walk, so for safety reasons, all those who have hi-vis vests are asked to wear them on this walk.

The John Murray Radio Show Walking Club is holding a walk in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo, on next Saturday January 29th, starting at 12.30pm. Some of the Ramblers plan to join the walk and cars are asked to assemble at the Aldi car park in Longford at 10.30am. Those intending to travel are asked to contact Brian Nerney at 086 2596656 beforehand.

Members who have a copy of the 2011 Calendar of walks are asked to note that the Abbeylara and Newcastle walks mentioned on the list for the 6th and 13th of February will be swapped, so Newcastle will now be on the 6th and Abbeylara on the 13th of February.

Members should also note that the very reasonable annual subscription of €20 per head or €30 per family is now due.

Plans are at an early stage for the Ramblers annual visit to Strangford for a few days around March 17th, to join the huge numbers of walkers from far and wide in their traditional St. Patrick's Day walk. Those who are interested in joining the trip should contact Club Secretary Patricia Bruton at 087 9812801 for further details.
