Two men who were arrested on suspicion of threatening a pensioner at knifepoint in Longford town on Monday evening are not from the area.
The pair were detained and questioned following an incident in the Canal Court area of town shortly after 4pm.
It’s at that stage gardai believe two men entered the victim’s residence before threatening her with a knife.
A mobile phone was taken during the raid as the men escaped on foot.
They were arrested a short time later by gardai and taken to Longford Garda Station for questioning.
Both suspects, who are in their 30s, have since been released as gardai prepare a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Gardai, meanwhile, have confirmed the victim who is in her 70s, despite her ordeal, is making a good recovery.
“We are quite satisfied with the direction of our investigation, but we do require any witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious between there (Canal Court) and Longford Train Station to come forward,” said Supt Fergus Treanor.
Separately, gardai are also appealing for the public’s help after a car was reported stolen in Longford town earlier this morning (Wednesday).
A silver Nissan Primera (06-D-79964) was taken from outside a house in Golf View, Glack sometime between 5:15am and 9:55am.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3350570.
