It was a sombre Peter Kelly TD who arrived at Longford Westmeath constituency count centre earlier this evening. The first tally indicated that the native Longfordian had achieved 3803 first preference votes. Speaking to the Leader at the count centre, Mr Kelly said:
“I never doubted it from the first day that I discovered that Fine Gael were at 38%. That was the reality. I personally do believe the polls. I always said if you got one poll, then maybe doubtful but if you have two polls or three different polls saying the same thing, then that can be a fact.”
Looking towards the evening ahead, Mr Kelly remained quietly optimistic of a “minor miracle”.
“People were giving me everything only the vote. They were just being nice to me. It’s neither here nor there and I’d just like to say thanks to the people of Longford Westmeath and in particular the people of Longford who were very good to me and my family all my life.
“I’ve been very lucky up to now. Maybe I had it too easy up to now. This is the only hard election I’ve ever had. Life is good up to this and I look forward to maybe a minor miracle happening this evening. We’ll have to wait and see the final count.”
