Age & Opportunity is the national organisation that aims to enable the best possible quality of life for us all as we age, where we are more active, more visible, more creative, more connected and more confident.

“A key part of our work is to support people in mid to later life through opportunities for personal development and civic engagement,” says Orla Byrne of Age & Opportunity.

“One way we do that is through our Changing Gears initiative which we run nationwide. It’s free and open to individuals and it’s coming to Longford this November.

"The course focuses on dealing with life transitions or challenges in mid to later life. Those changes could be to do with retirement, perhaps following a different career path, adapting to health challenges or bereavement. It gives people the chance to take stock and reframe transitions in their lives as opportunities with positive options and choices. In this way it challenges negative stereotypes about ageing also.”

This year Age & Opportunity ran Changing Gears in Kilkenny twice due to huge interest in the course. They are just about to run a second one in Sligo as they had a waiting list following the first course.

In Sligo, there were several participants from the Sligo Mens’ shed. James Derwin, one of those participants, felt he got a lot from the experience. “I thought it was absolutely brilliant. I found something happened within me as I listened to people share their experiences and I also found that my mood changed as I did the course, in a good way.”

Kay Murphy, from Ennis, Co Clare, who took part in Changing Gears earlier this year was delighted that she joined the course.

“The course content from beginning to end was very relevant. The different aspects of the course were so gently put. We came away totally satisfied at having participated and we gained so much information on what’s out there for us both nationally and locally.”
