A man with over 20 previous convictions has been fined after being found driving with a bald tyre.

Martin McDonagh, 7 Pinewood, Balbriggan, Fingal, Dublin, was convicted and fined in his absence at last week's Longford District Court sitting by Judge Bernadette Owens.

Garda Angela Keegan, giving evidence in the witness box, told of how she stopped a white Ford Transit van shortly after 10am on April 12, 2020 at Garryandrew, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford.

She said upon speaking to the driver who identified himself as the accused, immediately noticed there was no tax displayed on the vehicle and that its front right tyre was bald and had no thread left.

She said she also made a demand for Mr McDonagh's driving licence and certificate of insurance.

Garda Keegan said Mr McDonagh had indicated initially he would produce at Longford garda station before later indicating he would do so at Balbriggan garda station.

Judge Owens said he was satisfied with the evidence of Garda Keegan and was of a mind to convict Mr McDonagh despite his non appearance.

Prior to doing so, it was revealed the accused had 21 previous convictions, eight of which were for road traffic offences.

Longford pair in court over hairdressing row

A woman has been convicted and fined after a dispute over the cost of hairdressing services ended up in the courts.

In defence, the court heard Mr McDonagh was a full time carer for his wife, who was “quite ill”.

Judge Owens fined Mr McDonagh €250 for the bald tyre and €250 for the non display of tax.

Recognisances were fixed at €500 with a cash lodgement requirement of €250 in the event of an appeal.
