Gardai are investigating allegations of suspected child sex abuse in Longford dating back to around the year 2000.
The claims are believed to centre on alleged incidents that took place in or around the grounds of Longford’s GAA headquarters, Pearse Park. Gardai are believed to have identified two chief suspects who are not connected with Longford GAA.
A spokesperson from the Garda Press Office confirmed that an investigation was underway.
“Gardai in Longford have launched an investigation. Due to the sensitive nature of that investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to comment any further,” said the spokesman.
It is believed that Gardai arrested one man in relation to the investigation last week but this man has since been released. It is also understood that Gardai searched a number of houses in Co Longford last week as part of their investigation.
Speaking to the Longford Leader on Monday, the Chairman of Longford GAA Brendan Gilmore said he was aware of the investigation but would not be commenting any further.
However, he added that the allegations “had nothing to do with any club”.
