Marian Harkin MEP recently attended a session organised by Longford Community Resource Ltd to brief politicians on the threat local government reforms pose to its 170 employees.
Addressing LCRL’s staff and employees of Co Longford Rural Transport, the MEP strongly criticised the government’s determination to centralise control of activities such as LCRL and Longford Rural Transport.
In what she described as an “unncessary and inexplicable move” by the government, Ms Harkin said both services depended greatly on voluntary participation, with local knowledge raising the effectiveness of the services, and that the loss of this volunteer base would seriously affect delivery.
Ms Harkin said that she would be raising issues concerning current government policy at EU level and would be meeting representatives of LEADER groups in Brussels on Wednesday, April 9, to question current policy towards organisations such as LCRL and Co Longford Rural Transport.
